PLAY
ADDRESSES EXPECTATIONS IN YOUTH SPORTS
(
MADISON
) What do you get when a ‘win-at-all-costs’ Little League
Coach teams up with an ‘as-long-as-the-kids-are-having-fun’
Assistant Coach? Trouble. Follow two oddly matched Little
League coaches, played by Matthew A. Schrader and Scott Allen
Bennett, from their first tentative meeting to the climactic
championship game in this thoughtful comedy by Richard Dresser.
Directed by Ginger Swart, Blue Dot Theatre’s production of Rounding
Third will run July 19th through July 28th at the Bartell
Theatre, in downtown
Madison
.
Written as a response to a Little League coach’s creative
strategies for winning (or, as the author’s son puts it,
‘cheating’) Rounding Third presents us with two
archetypal youth coaches—opposite ends of the coaching
spectrum—Don, the domineering winner, and Michael, the father who
just wants the kids to have fun. Two well intentioned men with
conflicting points-of-view which never quite meet, which is where
the crux of the story lies.
Jennifer Neuls, Blue Dot Theatre's Producing Artistic Director, says
of producing this thought provoking, two man show, “[W]hen I saw Rounding
Third, I got very excited. It’s very funny and the
characters are great, but underneath the comedy there are some
pretty serious subjects brought up. For instance, how much
perfection do we expect from our children in sports, academics, or
any activity? And do we teach them what is really important by
lecture or by example? This play addresses these serious
subjects in an entertaining way and I think it will be a great night
of theatre for the whole audience, whether they are interested in
youth sports or not.”
Tickets for Rounding Third will be available beginning April 23rd.
Tickets can be purchased by visiting the Blue Dot Theatre website at
www.BlueDotTheatre.com, calling 608-205-9767, or at the door on the
