Can I work a job and be an apprentice?
We can't speak for your work schedule, but the
rehearsal, pre-production, production and post-production
schedules will be set well in advance so you'll know when you are
required to be here.
Will I just be sitting around watching
other people work?
A BDT Apprenticeship is about learning while
doing. You will watch other people work on occasion, but for
the most part you will be doing something constructive to aid in
the production.
Do I have to know a lot to be an
apprentice?
If you already knew everything, why would you need
an apprenticeship? We expect that there will be things you
don't know and we're okay with that. We also expect that you
may have some experience in one area and are trying something out.
Say you've always run the light board for your high school shows
and really want to give Stage Management a try. We can
handle that.
Do I need experience in theatre to be an
apprentice?
No. We are looking for interest and the
right personality. If this is something you always wanted to
try, apply. If you've done tons of shows and have oodles of
experience, you should apply too. We will tailor your work
to what you can handle.
How much does it cost to be an
apprentice?
The current cost for apprenticeship is
$15.00 to
cover the cost of course materials provided.
Do I have to be in high school or
college?
You must be at least 14 years old to apply for an
apprenticeship. At the present time we are recommending the
program for high school aged students, but would not disregard
applications from someone out of high school.
What areas are apprenticeships offered?
Apprenticeships vary by show. The
application for Apprenticeship asks what you have experience in
and what you are interested in learning. We TRY to offer
apprenticeships for areas that people are interested in, but
cannot always do so depending on the nature of the show. We
do not offer apprenticeships for actors or musicians at this time.
Who will be teaching me?
Apprentices work side by side with actual
designers and technicians. These are the people who are
doing the job for the show, and you are like their assistant.
How do I apply?
Start by filling out an application
online or call 608-205-9767 to have one mailed to you.
What happens when
my Apprenticeship is over? Is that it?
When the production is over,
we continue to provide services such as college and career
exploration, and resume and portfolio building advice and review.
